KIRINTEC & NATO 2019/2020
17 Nov 2021

In October 2018 the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) selected Kirintec Ltd as the supplier for the Future Afghan Sustainable Electronic Countermeasures (FASE) project. The project, sponsored by the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF), NATO Trust Fund Office, and Combined Security and Transition Command (Afghanistan) will procure, deliver, install and support ECM systems in Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police vehicles.

The aim of the project is to supply up to 2500 ECM systems to ANDSF users, along with training and mentoring to allow the ANDSF to take ownership of the capability. Kirintec, with its mission proven Mercury Blade 5 system was selected following a competitive tender, with first systems being delivered and installed within 14 weeks of contract award. Installation and training continues at a facility in Kabul. The project is successfully meeting all NSPA Key Performance Indicators with almost 1000 systems due to be delivered by October 2019. Mercury Blade 5 is now in daily use by the ANDSF, saving lives in the face of an increasing Radio Controlled IED threat.

Mercury Blade 5 is a modular vehicle mounted ECM system which has been mission proven in Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia with a number of government customers. Kirintec MD, Nick Watts commented “We are hugely proud of the performance of the Blade 5 system, and the relationship we have developed between the customer and the end user. The feedback from the ANDSF has been extremely positive, particularly with regard to on the ease of use and high levels of protection offered by Mercury Blade 5. This is a fantastic opportunity for Kirintec and its supply chain and shows what UK Small to Medium Enterprises can achieve”.

The signing of the contract has allowed Kirintec to place contracts with a number of its key suppliers, including Antares Defence Systems and Geometric Manufacturing Ltd. In both cases these contracts have created new roles and sustained existing jobs. Bruce Fullerton, MD Antares Defence Systems comments “The award of this contract has had a significant impact on Antares Defence Systems. As a company we have doubled our headcount, including 10 trainees from the local area”. The contract has also underpinned capital investment in new equipment and systems. Paul Wenham, Geometric MD added “the FASE contract has encouraged us to install a new Cloud Based ERP system, and to deploy new software onto our 5 Axis CNC Machines”.

With the programme in its transition phase, and with installations forecast to be complete in early 2020, Kirintec is continuing to ensure that the FASE capability is transferred to the ANDSF “We have been delivering Operator and Maintainer training from the start of the project” observed Si Timewell, Kirintec’s Technical Support Director, “with the inservice fleet growing daily we are focused on supporting the ANDSF Super Users as they take increasing ownership of the fleet. A key enabler to this is our ability to provide remote support from anywhere in the world”.
